MINIMUM
Qualifications:
Four years of experience in psychiatric patient care or in providing care, guidance or training to the developmentally disabled, physically disabled, or chemically dependent.
SUBSTITUTIONS:
College training with at least six semester hours per year in one or a combination of education, psychology, counseling, social work, sociology, child guidance, or nursing will substitute for the required experience on the basis of thirty semester hours for one year of experience.
A Mental Health Aide Diploma from a vocational technical college with an approved curriculum from the Louisiana State Board of Elementary and Secondary Education will substitute for six months of the required general experience.
NOTE:Most vacancies will be filled by promotion. Completion of an in-service training program administered by the department may be required.

Examples of Work:
Supervises and manages a patient care service consisting of a number of wards during an assigned shift; prepares work schedules and follows-up on assignments as designated.
Participates in formalized training programs for lower-level psychiatric aides and provides guidance in clinical work.
Instructs and supervises subordinate personnel in the proper care and supervision of patients and therapeutic intervention.
Makes rounds of inspection, reviews records, and monitors the environment to ensure ward safety and sanitary conditions.
Prepares reports as required by policies of the facility.
Assists professional personnel in developing programs on therapeutic techniques with patients, such as re-motivation, rehabilitation, and re-socialization.
Works with groups of patients in therapeutic activities.
